Obituary for Margaret K. Levine

Margaret Kessler Levine, 95, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Aventura, Florida passed away on May 1, 2018, at the Highlands of Wyomissing.

Margaret was the widow of Bernard “Sonny” Levine who died in March 2000. Born in East Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Molly Greenwald Kessler.

A first-generation American, Margaret was the only one of her eight siblings to obtain a degree beyond high school. She enrolled in the Army Nurse Corps and trained at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh, graduating as a Registered Nurse. However World War II ended before she could serve in the military but she continued her nursing career for many years while raising her family. She worked as a public assistance nurse and as a home health nurse in Pittsburgh as well as Florida before moving to Reading where her lifelong passion for helping others continued. She was a dedicated volunteer at Aventura Hospital and served as a classroom aide and reader in elementary schools for many years. Most recently she read to preschoolers in the Raising a Reader program.

Margaret is survived by her brother Eugene Kessler and sisters Frances Zeifer and Beatrice Huttner of Aventura, FL. She was preceded in death by brothers Bernard Kessler and David Kessler and sisters Ida Soffer, Jean Sanes and Lillian Lauer. She was the beloved mother of Robert M. Levine (Eileen) of Pittsburgh, Jason F. Levine (Debbie) of Derwood, MD and Judith L. Schwank (James) of Ruscombmanor Township.

Family was very important to Margaret and she loved her grandchildren, Laine (Cavazos), Rachel (Cliffton), Molly, Sarah, Joshua and Elana Levine. Her great grandchildren, Keagan and Virginia, brought her even greater joy.

Margaret attended Kesher Zion Synagogue. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 4, at Beth Shalom Cemetery in Shaler Township, PA. A memorial service will be held for her friends and family in Reading at a date to be determined this spring. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Greater Berks Food Bank, 117 Morgan Dr, Reading, PA 19608. Henninger Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements. www.henningerfuneralhome.com
