JANET GEHRES ALBRIGHT PROFESSOR

Janet L. Gehres, 87, died October 14, 2017, at Berks Heim, where she had been a resident for two months.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA and soon moved to Reading, PA where she spent the rest of her life. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Jacob and Myrtle (Cover) Gehres.

She was a member of the 13th Street Gang, attending elementary school, middle school, high school and Albright College, all on 13th Street in Reading, PA. She graduated from Reading Hospital School of Nursing in 1951, Albright College in 1954, Michigan State University in 1961 and did research at Temple Medical College. She taught nursing at Reading Hospital from 1951 to 54. She taught Biology at Albright College from 1962 to 1991. She specialized in Anatomy and Physiology, and Histology. Many current physicians, dentists, and nurses, benefitted from her teaching. As her health began to fail many of those former students became her care takers. Several of those students started The Janet L. Gehres Endowed Scholarship in 1997.

She was a member of the Pennsylvania Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Reading Hospital Alumnae Association and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

She was the recipient of the Albright College Alumni Association Service Award and was selected to the Strathmore Who’s Who 2003 edition and the World Wide Who’s Who in 2008.
