Obituary for Neal D. Shaffer

Neal David Shaffer, 75, born in New Haven, CT was the first child of the late Beatrice (Mersky) Shaffer and Dr. Irvin G. Shaffer. The family relocated to Reading in 1947 following Dr. Shaffer’s military service.

Neal started in the Reading school system, then went on to the George School, followed by the Tyler School of Fine Arts. He showed exceptional artistic talent for painting, sculpture and pottery.

As a graduate, he took his sense color and form to the Philadelphia marketplace as an independent florist for many years. His career highlight was participation in the Philadelphia Flower Show competitions on multiple occasions.

Chronic illness slowly robbed Neal of his physical abilities. In the last year of his life, he required ever-increasing levels of assistance.

Dignity and comfort were provided to Neal in abundance by the personnel at the Benderson Skilled Nursing Facility in Sarasota, Florida. His life ended peacefully in their Hospice Unit Tuesday December 5, 2017.

Mr. Shaffer’s surviving family include his two brothers and their families: Dr. Eugene M. Shaffer, Wyomissing and Daniel J. Shaffer, Bradenton, FL

Graveside service at Kesher Zion Cemetery will be observed privately at the convenience of the family. Henninger Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements. www.henningerfuneralhome.com
