Obituary

Rita Wilikofsky, 92, of Wyomissing, passed away at home on Saturday September 19, 2020. She was the daughter of the late David and Sarah Chechel, both immigrants from Eastern Europe. She enjoyed a long and fulfilling marriage to her devoted partner Norman with whom she celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary earlier this month.

Rita was born in the Bronx and raised in Brooklyn where she graduated from Abraham Lincoln H.S. She moved with her family to Miami, FL where she attended the University of Miami while also working for a local newspaper. After returning to Brooklyn, she worked for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union as a research librarian.

She met Norman on a ride home with a mutual friend after a weekend trip, and soon began dating the man with whom she spent the rest of her life. The couple moved to Reading in 1958. Rita took to motherhood with a passion and spent the next years raising her children. When they were older she took a job at RACC, first in the bookstore, but later assisting clients with resume writing and job interview skills. In her retirement she took time to enjoy her family, friends and travel. A generous listener, she loved people and had a keen interest in both their stories and their welfare. She was an avid reader and a skilled crossword solver. She was an active member of Kesher Zion Synagogue where she served for many years as co-chair of their Ad Journal. She was also a world class shopper who always knew a deal when she saw one.

Rita is survived by her adoring husband of 65 years and her children Adam Wilikofsky (Diane) of Lancaster, PA and Andrea Sanders (Leonard) of Bryn Mawr, PA, as well as four grandsons David and Hugh Wilikofsky and Samuel and Matthew Sanders. She was the very best partner, mother, grandmother and friend imaginable. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Dear Norman, Adam, Andi and families,
Edward and I send our deepest sympathy on your loss of you wife, mother and grandmother. I got to know Rita working with her on the KZ ad journal and always enjoyed being in her company. She was a very lovely and intelligent woman, an asset to our community, and she will greatly missed by all who knew her. May the many wonderful memories you have of her be a blessing to all of you, and comfort and sustain you now and in the years to come.

I knew Rita and Norman my entire life , my parents having been their neighbors in the Hampden House Apartments. I will always remember her as being soft spoken with a sense of humor and always with a smile on her face. Throughout her illness that same smile was always present when my mother or I would see her, and even when she didn't feel well she was without complaint, remaining the same gracious lady as always.

My condolences to Norman, Adam, Andi, and their families.

I had the pleasure of working with Rita in The Working Class at RACC. She was a wonderful coworker, very good at her job, and so funny and friendly. My favorite Rita memory is from a conversation several of us were having about going on vacation. Someone mentioned going camping and Rita’s comment was that when she goes on vacation, she expects to have it at least as good as she has it at home if not better...obviously no camping for Rita. My condolences to her family.

Rita was one of my favorite library patrons at the Northeast Branch of Reading Public Library. When she and Norman visited, they brightened our day. We talked books and movies and Masterpiece Theater. She was a charter member of our book discussion group and shared stories of growing up in Brooklyn as well as her well-lived life. I am grateful to have counted Rita as a friend.

I was so very saddened to hear about Rita's passing. I absolutely loved when she and her husband, Norman, would come in to the library in Reading. They have always been more than just a married couple- they are, and were, a team. I loved hearing about what books she was reading and new TV series she could recommend to me.
She was such a wonderful person, and I always looked forward to seeing her.
My deepest sympathies.
