You and I became best friends in 1961 and remained so until the day you died, nearly 60 years. I lived at 7th and Laurel, you lived in Gilson Alley, and we were Boyz n the Hood at Reading Iron playground. We walked the streets, drank wine, played basketball, ran track, chased the ladies, went to Bible Study at the Mennonite Church, got into fights and other sorts of adolescent mischief; we were Boyz n the Hood.

When no one was around, and it was just you and me, we discussed Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and copied lines from Shakespeare's plays to rap to our girls. You practiced your French, and I practiced my German with my Dad who spoke both helping us out. We were Boyz n the Hood! Except for the fact that we both were in College Prep at RHS, very few knew how smart we were. Being book smart doesn't play well on the street when you are Boyz n the Hood.

I went to jail, the Marines, and thanks in no small measure to you, to alcohol rehab. You went to the Army, got married, had a family, and attended Kutztown State. In 1973, when I left for the West Coast, you saw me off and as we parted, I said what I always say when I separate from some I love, " If I do not see you any more in this world, I'll see you in the next!" We lost touch for five years. Despite this we remained Boyz n the Hood; nothing could breech our friendship. When I graduated from Harvard and Stanford, you were not at all surprised, congratulating me for bringing honor to Reading Iron, making me an honorary Ironman, giving me an Ironmen Athletic Association tee-shirt.

Now you belong to the Ages, and I must let you go. But we will meet again in the Sweet Bye-and-Bye. Nothing can separate us, not even death, 'cause we remain Boyz n the Hood. I'll meet you at the Starland Cafe, Bro!

Brotha Russell. Thank you for all the memories from over the years. Your wit and smile will always be missed, whether it was one on one or at an Ironmen meeting. I will always remember all the mentoring you provided me and the fellas. My condolences to the family on behalf of the Ironmen Athletic Association and the Ellison Family. Rest In Peace King.
