Obituary for Dorothy Joan Hinkle (Kirk)

Dorothy Joan (Kirk) Hinkle
Dorothy Joan Hinkle, of Shillington, 88, passed away on the evening of Wednesday April 28, 2021 in her home, after an 11-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and a stroke occurring the week before her death. She was the wife of the late Donald Hinkle, who passed away on April 3, 2020. They were married on July 31, 1955. The daughter of William Kirk and Dorothy (Simerson) Kirk, Joan was born in Trenton, NJ on March 24, 1933.
Joan is survived by her daughter Donna Osborne, Shillington, PA and her brothers, David W. Kirk, Trenton, NJ, George R. Kirk, Langhorne, PA, and many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Jerry L. Kirk.
Joan graduated from William MacFarland High School, in Bordentown, NJ in 1951. She worked for a few years for New York Life Insurance Co. until her marriage to Donald, and then her home and family became her focus point. When her daughter Donna attended college, she worked for 4 years, as the baker for the Governor Mifflin School District.
Joan was known for her smile, her loving and joyous personality, her baking, wonderful recipes, and always her hugs. In her younger years, Joan was a fantastic soprano, always singing in every choir her husband Don directed, and singing many solos with Don at the keyboard. They were quite a pair and their marriage was based on a deep dedication to their faith and their love for the Lord. At Don’s last church position, Joan helped with organizing music and choir folders and was lovingly dubbed. “The Admiral” by Don. She was a long-time member and choir member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, PA.
Joan fiercely loved her family and friends and was always ready to lend a hand and loving heart to those in need. The door to her home was always open to anyone.
Her battle with Alzheimer’s Disease was long, and even though she had lost her memories, those who are still here will cherish those memories for her.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Henninger Funeral Home, Inc., Reading, PA is assisting the family.
