Obituary for Joshua M. Kastenbaum

Joshua Morris Kastenbaum, age 43, of Reading passed away on Monday, May 3rd. Joshua, the eldest child of Michael Kastenbaum and Gayle (Levin) Kastenbaum, was born in Reading in 1978. Joshua grew up in the Reading area and attended school in the Schuylkill Valley and Governor Mifflin School Districts.
Joshua was a person with many hobbies, including reading, movies, television, music, fishing, working and playing with animals, and maintaining close relationships with children in his life. As a young child, he would follow his father around the yard with his bubble-making push mower - an interest that would continue through his adulthood with an avid love of yardwork, tree trimming, and mowing the lawn.
Joshua will be remembered for his amazing memory - often recalling the most minor of conversational details or rare facts about extended family members. His physicians would also comment on his knowledge of medicine - having memorized a wide array of medications, symptoms, and diagnoses. To their surprise, he only ever replied, “my father is a Doctor.”
Joshua was particularly proud of his family’s accomplishments, including his parents’ and siblings’ work, and was very fond of his extended family, including many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Despite the fact that Josh spent time away from home, he remained emotionally close to his family.
Joshua is survived by his father and three siblings: Dr. Hannah Kastenbaum of Philadelphia, Kate Holsapple and husband, Kevin Holsapple, of San Francisco, and Isaac Kastenbaum and wife, Allison Mansueto, of New York City. His family and friends will remember him.
His father would like to thank the Reading Hospital physicians who brought Joshua into his life and who extended his life.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, May 9th at 2:00 PM at Kesher Zion Synagogue Cemetery at 1051 Philadelphia Avenue in Shillington with a gathering following at the family home. Appropriate COVID-19 precautions will be in-place.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Berks County. Henninger Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements. Please leave condolences online at www.henningerfuneralhome.com.
