Leon S. Stamm decided to take his eternal retirement July 10, 2022. Leon was 93, a devoted husband to Laudine (Deanie), father to Susan Blakely and Peter Stamm and “Grandpa” to Aaron and Willem Blakely. He is the last of five siblings and will be missed by his nephews, nieces and extended family.
Leon was known here in Reading for his work at Berks Trust/American Bank/Meridian/Wells Fargo. Notably, his career is highlighted by his contributions to the development of the ATM/Mac machine and how we interface as customers today.
Berks Grand Opera and Berks Chorale kept Dad singing and building sets alongside Laudine. Leon’s dedication to First United Church of Christ, Reed & Washington Streets in Reading, was a testament to his strong faith and commitment to others.
As a 70+ year member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows Leon served faithfully and with passion. His work with the Philadelphia Orphanage and the Middletown Home are among the many IOO initiatives he supported through service and leadership.
On the personal side, Leon was known for his “delightfully gruff exterior and a heart of gold,” wielding a good pun or dry comment, a love for Bugs Bunny and all things music, refusing to eat chicken, his love of butter pecan, birch beer and “good, old-fashioned ice water.”
His very poor eyesight was legendary from first grade forward and he persevered through life managing a significant disability without allowing it to limit his experience.
In later years, Dad impressed us with his open mind and progressive attitude. He was a strategic and creative problem solver who did not judge or question when asked for help. The business minded exterior Leon was famous for, many times disguised the loving man who worried more for those he felt responsible for versus himself.
“I don’t know if I will make it to 100, But I know today is the closest I have come so far” Rest Easy, Dad. You did a great job and we will miss you dearly.
A closed viewing will be held on Friday AM, July 15 at the Henninger Funeral Home in Reading preceding a 10:30 AM Family Service at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, a personal request; Leon was passionate about supporting vulnerable people. Everyone knows a senior, a neighbor, a person with illness or disability, a child, a caregiver or family… all who would benefit from care and attention. Make it your mission to identify and support these people actively and often. A card, a phone call, a kind word, a researched gift or quiet support…These people and their caregivers need to know they are not alone. Your small act of kindness and humanity is what ultimately makes a difference in the life of another. Please make the intentional choice to support a vulnerable person.
